“When I saw the progress my son was making, I was assured that I have not failed in life. I pushed harder to finish my course at Sheridan” these were the heartfelt remarks by one of the presenters at an informational event organized by the Faculty of Continuing Education at Sheridan College. In that moment, I decided to get involved in part-time teaching. The impact I saw was both immediate and real. The presenters shared in detail the challenges they faced in getting employment in today’s market and how a short continuing education professional course or support from a mentor helped them get employment. Their stories inspired me. I was honored to speak about Experience Your Life Expo and my passion to build something that connects recent graduates/young professional with employment and an opportunity to contribute positively in the world.
I am a firm believer that one must act to change the world. As Nelson Mandela said, “Action without vision is only passing time, vision without action is merely day dreaming BUT vision with action can change the world”. I firmly believe that corporate executives need to take more time out of their schedule to mentor, support and teach. It is truly a rewarding feeling that brings purpose into a very busy life. Trust me – I have been there as a global executive for several complex industries. We need to support our academic institutes to help prepare the workforce of tomorrow. In that spirit, I am THRILLED to share that I have accepted the offer to teach a course at Sheridan College Faculty of Continuing Education. The classes start on Tuesday evening.
If you are looking for options to make a difference through entrepreneurship or to gain necessary skills to be successful in the corporate world, I highly encourage you to join this course. The registration is still open and the classes are designed for working professionals so they are from 6:30 p.m. onwards only on Tuesdays. You can register through the following link. It will be based on Einstein’s philosophy “I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn”. Based on teaching experiences that I did around the world, I will infused the sessions with my own practical experience and visits from industry executives to share their learnings from the field. It will be an experience that brings together practical advice, real lessons from the field, industry resources, recognized credential and access to mentors.
We have a crisis on our hands related to youth unemployment. Students are graduating to find long queues, constant rejection and a job market that requires ‘experience’ even for entry level jobs. I firmly believe that the solution lies in the collaboration and focused actions by the four concerned parties – employers, academic institutes, government and the students themselves. If you have been following my story, you know the sincerity that lies behind this initiative. As I moved out of my corporate job, I have made it a mission to address this issue by working on each dimension. It has been a pleasure to find likeminded people in each sector and we are joining hands to raise awareness and create solutions. It is making a real difference in the lives of youths that are working tirelessly to build their lives, make a respectful decent living and stabilize themselves financially. Stay tuned for more insights from the frontlines as we take on the big bold issue of youth unemployment. I hope to see some of you in the course!
